Devil You Know

Gone is the time to be the one to dance to the fiddle of a younger man’s desires
Loving hearts beat the drum to keep the march along the straight ‘n narrow road
Cuz the stale sweet nectar’s taste only resigns this state of grace

Hear it now, the siren song, it calls in the dark singing promises familiar
Idle hands play the part of dissonance in harmony with all the sins that breach the will and wisdom of good men

No time heals the devil you know just gotta break that deal or down the road you might find yourself alone ‘n old and in your dying breath you might find your soul
Mama done told me once or twice, “You gotta fill your heart with that Jesus Christ,
And baby then you will know that love will keep the devil below”

Effortlessly cast a stone and count the ripples on into infinity
Pray in time to atone and wash away those days when this old flesh would  deny the thirst for blood upon the vine

No time heals the devil you know just gotta break that deal or down the road you might find yourself alone ‘n old and in your dying breath you might find your soul
Mama done told me once or twice, “You gotta fill your heart with that Jesus Christ,
And baby then you will know that love will keep the devil below”
